Lyft Black Insurance Requirements Guide

Lyft Black and Lyft Black XL are chauffeured services operating under the same TCP/livery regulatory framework as Uber Black. The insurance requirements are nearly identical, but there are a few Lyft-specific details drivers need to know. This guide covers what Lyft provides, what you're responsible for, and how to get compliant.

Lyft Black vs. Standard Lyft Insurance

Standard Lyft drivers (Lyft Express, Lyft Plus) operate under TNC insurance rules. Lyft Black drivers operate under TCP or livery rules — the same framework as limousine operators. This means Lyft's TNC contingent coverage does not apply to Lyft Black; instead, TCP/livery policies govern your coverage.

What Lyft Covers vs. Your Responsibility

During an active trip (P3), Lyft provides $1M liability. Between trips (P1/P2), Lyft's gap coverage is minimal. Your personal auto policy will not cover commercial use. You need a commercial TCP or livery policy covering all periods — not just during trips.

California Lyft Black Requirements

California Lyft Black drivers must hold a CPUC TCP permit and $1.5M commercial auto liability with Form PL on file. Lyft Black XL (seating 6 passengers) may require $5M under some interpretations — confirm your passenger count and permit class with the CPUC.

Coverage Checklist

  • Commercial TCP or livery policy — $1.5M minimum in California
  • TCP permit (California) or livery license (other states)
  • CPUC Form PL filing (California)
  • Physical damage coverage on your own vehicle
  • Workers' comp if you employ drivers

Documents Needed to Quote

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lyft Black insurance the same as Uber Black insurance?+

Substantially yes — both require TCP/livery coverage rather than TNC coverage, and the minimum limits and filing requirements are the same by state. We write a single policy that satisfies both Lyft Black and Uber Black requirements if you drive for both.

Does my Lyft Black policy cover Lyft Black XL trips?+

If you're adding a larger vehicle, confirm your TCP class covers the seating capacity. A TCP P permit covers 1–7 passengers; TCP A covers 8+. The same policy can cover multiple vehicles as long as each is listed.
